The Department is responsible for the formulation, review, and monitoring of government policies on technology and science to foster innovation. It also oversees policies on research and development to facilitate technology transfer and commercialization.
The Department performs the following specific functions:
a) Develop and review science and technology, and research and development policies;
b) Set and enforce science and technology standards;
c) Facilitate and coordinate research and development activities;
d) Track and identify technology and science advancements that can be incorporated into the country’s development agenda;
e) Coordinate the promotion of science and technology transfer and commercialisation as a vehicle for development;
f) Undertake science, technology, and innovation impact assessment and monitoring and evaluation (M&E); and
g) Collaborate with industry and the wider private sector in developing relevant innovations.
Science and Technology Post Graduate Scholarship
The scholarship is meant to support students wanting to pursue postgraduate studies at MSc or PhD level at any of the local public Universities. The scholarship is accorded at a 70:30 ratio in favor of female students.
The Department comprises three Sections as follows:
Science Development Section
The Section is responsible for the formulation, review, and provision of oversight on the implementation of government policies on science. It also undertakes impact assessment of science on national development.

Research and Development Section
The Section is responsible for the formulation, review, and provision of oversight on government policies on research and development. It also coordinates the setting and enforcement of research and development standards.

Technology and Innovation Development Section
The Section is responsible for the formulation, review, and provision of oversight on the implementation of government policies on technology and innovation. It is also responsible for overseeing policies on technology transfer, commercialization, setting, and enforcement of technology standards.
